COVER MATERIALS CHARACTERISTICS
TEXTILE VERSUS PAPER
Textile fibers make materials stronger than paper, preventing them from tearing easily, especially with large and heavy books. Therefore, the use of textile is more durable. Additionally, a textile cover material adds extra value to your product due to its luxurious appearance.
WHAT REQUIREMENTS MUST OUR COVER MATERIALS MEET?
Our cover materials need to bond well with cardboard when the prescribed adhesives are applied, while not allowing the adhesives to seep through. The materials mustn’t be susceptible to scratching, give off lint and curl during the mechanized binding process or the preceding printing process. They can be processed both on the binding machine as manually and stay strong at joints.
WHY DO YOU USE THIN INSTEAD OF THICK PAPER LINING?
Paper lining or paper backing provides extra stability, prevents stretching and fraying, but mostly it prevents glue seepage. With the paper on the backside, the cloth behaves more as paper, meaning, it becomes easier to cut, bend and work with. Yet, when you use thick paper the material becomes stiff and won’t bend as easily as with thin lining.
Continuous tests and years of experience show that thin lining with high-quality non-acid papers of 30 or 40 gram are most suitable for further processing and possible cardboard backing. We don’t charge for the paper backing as it is inherent to the product.
WHAT KIND OF GLUE IS USED FOR PAPER BACKING?
Our paper backing glue is a poly vinyl acetate glue with a synthetic origin, is food safe and may be discharged by us directly into the sewer.
WHICH FIBERS ARE USED AND WHAT ARE THE ADVANTAGES / DISADVANTAGES OF THE DIFFERENT FIBERS?
Most of our materials are made from Lenzing Ecovero viscose, which is derived from purified cellulose created from wood pulp (beech wood). Rayon/viscose is generally less strong than polyester or cotton, so we paperline it for added durability. We also use sustainable cotton from Africa and a blend of cotton and flax, which gives a rustic appearance. Our Halflinnen Dark and Halflinnen Light are made from linen yarns that carry the Masters of Linen mark. Additionally, we weave a combination of cotton and polyester which provides high tensile strength and wear resistance.
WILL THE CLOTH MARK?
We advise to wrap the end-product in plastic when being transported or stacked to avoid stains and scratches on the material.
COATED VS. NON-COATED MATERIAL
When making a product for heavy use, we recommend our coated materials. In addition to their high tensile strength and wear resistance, they can be wiped clean with a damp cloth, making them ideal for menu cards. If you want to emphasize the beauty of the woven texture, you can choose from a wide range of uncoated materials in our collection.
APPLICATIONS
Our materials are primarily used for high-end coffee table books, luxury and premium packaging, albums and photo books, stationery, sample presentations, and collection books. They are also used in the hospitality industry for guest books, menu cards, compendiums, and other creative applications such as canvases and DIY crafting.
WHICH GLUE TO USE?
Cloth over cardboard:
- For bookcase machines, use animal glue or hotmelt bookbinding glue.
- For hand binding or packaging, use synthetic glue.
Cloth to cloth:
- Use either animal glue or hotmelt glue.
PRINTABILITY
Nowadays, many printing techniques can be used for textile cover materials. Even combinations of various printing techniques on the same binding are perfectly possible. For a brief overview of the techniques best suited for our cover materials, read more on this page:

ARE THE COVER MATERIALS RECYCLABLE?
For the dyeing and coating process, as well as other finishing processes, we follow REACH directives and select the most environmentally friendly ingredients. The lamination paper is acid-free and FSC-certified, and the adhesive used is polyvinyl acetate and acid-free. However, as our materials are semi-finished and usually undergo treatments afterwards we cannot make any statements about this.
MAINTENANCE
CLEANING ADVICE FOR COATED TEXTILE COVER MATERIALS
Coated textile cover materials include Buckram Light, Buckram Premium, Fancy Linen, Fancy Metallic, Magic, Magic Chic, Metallium, and Senator.
For general cleaning, lightly dampen a soft lint-free cloth with clean water. Wipe the surface gently to remove any general grime or fingerprints. Ensure the cloth is not overly wet to prevent soaking the material. Excess water can damage the coating or the underlying textile. Immediately follow with a dry cloth to absorb any remaining moisture.

HOW TO CALCULATE HOW MANY METERS YOU NEED FOR SHEETING?
Our machines need 2.5cm on both sides to hold the material, this means that we always work with a gross and net width.
As an example we take Brillianta:
Gross width of Brillianta is 135cm, and therefore its usable width is 130cm.
For 1000 sheets in width 32.5cm x 70cm:
We can cut 4 sheets of 32.5cm from the width (130 cm)
If you divide 1000 sheets by 4, you get 250 sheets
250 x 0.70 = 175 meters.
To conclude, for 1000 sheets in width 32.5 cm and length 70 cm you need 175 meters of Brillianta.
GRAINLINE
Grainline is the orientation of woven threads. It tells which direction the threads are running. Only when there is a large difference in the warp and the weft, such as with Regina and Natuurlinnen you must consider this.
WHAT DOES NM MEAN IN THE SPECIFICATIONS?
The Nm stands for ‘normal metric’ – which is based on 1000 meters of yarn per kilogram. The higher the number the finer the yarn.
